Dr. Anna Salter

Tuesday March 3rd Plenary Speaker

"Counterintuitive Behaviors in Trauma"

Victims of sexual assault often engage in counter-therapeutic behaviors that sabotage their sense of self-worth as well as their legal cases. Such behaviors may include not escaping when they had the opportunity, not yelling when others are in the vicinity, continuing with the evening, (e.g., going to the movies with a date rapist after the rape), texting and having further contact with the offender, and sex with someone else after the assault. This workshop will examine such victim behavior and the reasons behind those behaviors. The workshop will examine the myth that there is one type of victim response to sexual assault and argue that the type of victim response is largely dictated by external factors, including the presence or absence of counterintuitive perpetrator behaviors.

Nicole Weisensee Egan

Wednesday March 4th Plenary Speaker

"Why did it take 13 years to Convict America’s Dad?"

For 15 years, one reporter investigated allegations against Bill Cosby - even when no one was listening!

Award-winning journalist and former People senior writer Egan was the first reporter in the country to dig deeply into the Bill Cosby scandal in 2005 when other reporters shied away. Starting from scratch she was able to quickly become sourced and began breaking exclusive stories while working for the Philadelphia Daily News. She soon found herself under attack by everyone from the district attorney to Cosby’s team to other members of the media but refused to back down. When the scandal bubbled up again in October 2014 she was able to quickly reconnect with those victims and sources and began breaking exclusive stories once again, including the news of Cosby’s arrest on Dec. 30, 2015.

Her book, Chasing Cosby, provides a definitive account of Bill Cosby's transition from revered father figure to convicted criminal and calls out all of the enablers who allowed him to get away with his crimes for nearly half a century before finally being brought to justice.

Organized by

The Children's Advocacy Centers of Illinois (CACI) is dedicated to the development and growth of Illinois' Children's Advocacy Centers. CACI accomplishes this by offering its members a cadre of services which are rooted in the not-for-profit organization's driving principles: leadership, education and collaboration.

Established in 1995, CACI is the network that coordinates and provides a comprehensive response to child abuse in Illinois. As the leading resource on child abuse issues, CACI stays abreast of the latest research and literature in the child abuse field, as well as the most child-friendly approaches in investigation and treatment of child abuse.

CACI is dedicated to the multidisciplinary, child advocacy approach and a coordinated, comprehensive response to child abuse. To that end, CACI offers discipline-specific trainings to its members throughout the year; CACI seeks opportunities to collaborate with partner agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Illinois Attorney General's Office, on education and public policy issues; and CACI guides its members on "best practices" in the field.

CACI is an accredited chapter of the National Children's Alliance. Accreditation standards include:

  • Organizational Capacity: CACI implements sound administrative practices in both programming and fiscal operations.
  • Membership: CACI works with its members to collect and provide vital statistical information. CACI provides services that support and encourage its members to meet and exceed the 10 standards required for their national accreditation.
  • Training and Technical Assistance: CACI provides training and program support to developing and existing Children's Advocacy Centers throughout Illinois.
